Summary:
The primary purpose of this position is to oversee forestry activities under direction of the Elliott State Research Forest Manager, DSL Director, the Elliott’s Board of Directors, and the Land Board.
This is a limited duration appointment and is represented by the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). This position is supported by existing legislative funding and is expected to become permanent.
As the Forester for the Elliott State Research Forest, you will advance forest management consistent with the forest’s foundational documents and Forest Management Plan, including the mission and management policies adopted by the Land Board and the Habitat Conservation Plan. You will have the opportunity to:
- Develop, draft, and advance specific forest management activities within the Elliott’s biennial operations plans, in coordination with other team staff and processes.
- Oversee contract administration for forest management services.
- Develop and ensure advancement of project and larger monitoring efforts, forest inventory or other data needs, and GIS maps utilizing GPS units and ESRI ArcGIS software as needed for forest management duties.
- Monitor public use of the forest and oversee and enter into interagency agreements.
- Coordinate wildfire protection of the forest, including through Oregon Department of Forestry or other fire protection agreements as well as communications with Coos and Douglas Forest Protection Associations.

Summary:
The Elliott State Research Forest Manager will advance work with local, statewide, national, and international implications of great interest to the public, Tribes, industries, organizations, government agencies, science and research entities, and landowners or people concerned about forest management, forest products, conservation, recreation, education and other values both on and beyond the Elliott.
This is a full-time position within the Department and is not represented by a union. This position is supported by existing legislative funding and is expected to become permanent.
As the Elliott State Research Forest Manager, you will make wide-ranging decisions concerning complex and interrelated programs and disciplines. You will have the opportunity to:
- Build support for the program among the public, legislators, beneficiaries and constituents for DSL, and members of the board to increase awareness and facilitate positive relationships.

Summary:

Summary:
The Forest Manager will assist the not-for-profit Redwood Forest Foundation in managing its 50,000 -acre Usal Redwood Forest in northern Mendocino County and support its mission to acquire, protect, restore and manage forestlands and other related resources in the Redwood Region for the long-term benefit of the communities located there.
The primary responsibilities of the Forest Manager include:
- Supervise and support the professional development of the forest management team comprised of RPFs, forest technicians, a wildlife biologist, and a restoration specialist. Support programmatic efforts to actively engage local communities in the management of the Usal Redwood Forest.
- Work directly with RFFI’s CEO to maximize productive, efficient and cost-effective management of the Usal Forest consistent with the RFFI vision and mission statement.
- Coordinate log sales, accounting, payments and taxes with contractors, staff and CEO
- Provide management administration, including staff supervision, budgets, development and review of Timber Harvest Plans (THP), restoration projects, management of grants, property security and easement protection, updating the Usal Redwood Forest Management Plan, and other operational aspects of forest management.
- Oversee and participate in field audits associated with Conservation Easements, Carbon Projects, FSC Certification and other third-party activities as required.
- Plan and contract for necessary forest management support work related to plant and wildlife surveys, forest inventory, growth and yield projections, tree planting, vegetation management, road management, GIS Services and other services, as required.
- Assist the RFFI Board of Directors and staff with articulating the future desired condition of the Usal Redwood Forest and taking a leadership role in its management to achieve these conditions.
