This position functions as the District Forester for the Bernalillo District. The District is comprised of approximately 6.6 million acres of fire protection responsibility and encompasses approximately 160,000 acres of private commercial forest and 1.5 million acres of pinon juniper and Bosque areas, and 4.9 million acres of non-forest watershed. The District also has three of the five largest New Mexico Metropolitan Areas as well as 65% of the population in the state and a high number of communities at risk from wildland fire. The District Forester must well versed in federal and state laws, regulations, legal agreements and policies and procedures to guide their decision making and program implementation.
The District Forester is required to determine the complexity and direct the assembly of resources to manage fires with complex response jurisdictions and multiple land ownership boundaries, often times within the wildland urban interface. The position uses laws and agreements to determine objectives for Incident Management Teams on large and complex multi-jurisdictional incidents. The position generates delegations of authority to ensure the Incident Management Team is given proper direction and to provide performance criteria from which the Team is provided a performance rating.
The District Forester coordinates and directs the implementation of cross-boundary landscape scale forest and watershed management and timber harvesting in the District.
