On May 3rd\, we will gather at Settler’s Lodge for dinner followed by fire-side conversations. \nMay 4th we will head to Baskahegan lands. Baskahegan is known for their sustainable forest practices. We will begin this visit by hiking back to their unmanaged Ecological Reserve – prepare for wet and muddy ground (bring extra socks!). The Black backed woodpecker is a rare bird in northern Maine. Once present in Baskahegan’s red pine stand\, the bird has not been seen for several years. We will stop at a recently harvested site to learn more and discuss habitat management for this species. \nAfter\, we will head to Baskahegan’s floating road where we will break for lunch. This site has undergone years of ecological survey alongside The Nature Conservancy. \nBefore we get bogged down by our digesting stomachs\, we will visit one final site\, the red pine stand. This site was formerly homogenized and now\, following several harvests\, shows a better shifting mosaic. \nWe will wrap up our discussion with a sendoff by 4 pm.  \nAgenda:   \nMay 3rd\, 2023 \n6:00 pm: Dinner at Settler’s Lodge \n7:30 pm: Campfire and conversation \nMay 4th\, 2023 \n7:00 am: Breakfast at Settler’s Lodge (for those who stayed the night before) \n8:30 am: Drive to meeting point \n9:00 am: Meet at the Burn Road log landing\, begin Baskahegan field tour \n12:00 pm: Field Lunch \n4:00 pm: Depart  \nPlease bring: \n\nWater bottle\nSnacks\nFootware that can get muddy and wet\, traveling through swampy\, unmanaged terrain\nInsect repellent and/or bug net\nSunscreen\nIf staying overnight\, necessary items (linens provided)\nA mask\, just in case\, for carpools to field sites\n\nTransportation: \nPlease be prepared to carpool. SUMMARY:Strategies to reduce wildfire smoke in frequently impacted communities in south-western Oregon
DESCRIPTION:Register for this webinar \nMarch 21\, 2023\n12:00 p.m. Pacific Time/1:00 MT/2:00 CT/ 3:00 ET \nPresenter: Rick Graw\, USDA Forest Service \nSmoke from wildfires is a well-recognized public health and safety issue. While there have been extensive efforts to help communities be “smoke ready”\, most people would still prefer not to live with weeks of unhealthy air quality during the summer and fall. This webinar will address what could be done to reduce the amount of smoke experienced by frequently impacted communities during wildfire season. By knowing the frequent pathways that air moves into these communities during wildfire season\, we gain some insights as to where fuel treatments can have a greater probability of reducing smoke from subsequent wildfires. Rather than using wind roses\, meteorological modeling and GIS processing techniques provide raster images of these pathways for each community. A case study illustrates that these strategic fuel treatments can reduce smoke by 40 percent from subsequent wildfires. \nThe webinar will also cover how raster images and fuel reduction strategies can be integrated into planning and implementation strategies including regional wildfire crisis strategies\, forest restoration plans\, and community wildfire protection plans. Additionally\, the frequent air pathways can be used during wildfire season for decision support to reduce smoke impacts to the public.

SUMMARY:Getting to the Core: Utilizing paleoecology to understand fire in the northeast
DESCRIPTION:Register \nFebruary 22\, 2023\n1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Eastern time \nIn this hour-long webinar we will hear from Madi Landrum\, a Ph.D. student in the Ecology and Environmental Sciences Program and Climate Change Institute at the University of Maine\, as she explores the role of paleoecology in fire management decisions on the land in the northeast. \nThe need to understand long-term natural and human influences on fire is becoming increasingly important as global climate change increases the frequency and severity of forest fires in the northeastern United States. Meanwhile\, there is a growing appreciation for the role Indigenous peoples have played in maintaining ecosystems over millennia. While climate is largely thought to be the main driver of regional ecosystem processes in the northeast\, the role of fire\, including Indigenous fire management\, is actively debated. Historical accounts and Indigenous oral knowledge (e.g. place names) indicate that Native peoples have used fire to create mosaic landscapes throughout the northeast\, which is likely to have influenced local diversity and species composition\, altering overall forest structure. SUMMARY:Assessing the effects of Close-to-Nature Forestry on forest birds
DESCRIPTION:Register \nFebruary 21\, 2023\nNoon – 1 Eastern Time \nEurope’s Close-To-Nature Forestry (CTNF) that protects forest canopies has not been promoted to help avian abundance or diversity; however\, forest bird populations in Europe have increased 7% over the last two decades. We posit whether similar forest management approaches in the eastern USA could benefit North American birds. We sought to 1) assess the effects of forest structural characteristics on avian species richness in a CTNF managed forest; 2) compare our results to county-level eBird data to identify the challenges of assessing the impacts of forestry practices on birds at landscape scales; 3) highlight the ambiguities in current forest management guidelines for improving avian habitats and 4) suggest long-term direction for evaluating the impacts of alternative forest management practices on birds. Our case study provides preliminary evidence that CTNF-managed forests may support diverse birds of high conservation value that are normally drawn to different forest management extremes. We also provide recommendations for using eBird data to assess alternative forest management strategies at landscape scales and a synthesized look at the forest management guidelines provided by many of the major players in American ornithology.

These range from actions designed to increase the resistance of current composition and structure to negative impacts to those designed to transition forests to substantially different characteristics. A component of many adaptation approaches will likely include assisted migration of future climate-adapted tree species or genotypes. While forest-assisted migration (FAM) has been discussed conceptually and examined experimentally for almost a decade\, operationalizing FAM (i.e.\, routine use in forest conservation and management projects) lags behind the acceptance of the need for climate adaptation. As the vulnerability of forest ecosystems in climate change increases\, FAM may need to become an integral management tool to reduce long-term risks to ecosystem function\, despite real and perceived barriers for its implementation. In this webinar\, we will discuss the concept of operational-scale FAM and why it remains a controversial\, not yet widely adopted component of climate adaptation. We will present three case studies of operational-scale FAM to illustrate how the practice can be approached pragmatically within an adaptation framework despite the barriers to acceptance. Finally\, we will discuss a path toward advancing the wide use of operational-scale FAM.
