SUMMARY:Northern White Cedar Field Tour
DESCRIPTION:Register today! \nAgenda for download \nMorning coffee and light snacks provided. Please bring your own lunch\, water\, and snacks and dress for a field tour in the woods. \nCo-sponsored by the Forest Stewards Guild and the Vermont Land Trust \nJoin us in Greensboro\, Vermont for a day of exploration and learning about Northern White Cedar. Known as the tree of life\, Northern White Cedar has a variety of uses from fence posts\, shingles\, and cabin logs\, to fragrant and medicinal oil. We’ll discuss the ecological importance of cedar in our forest communities\, and we’ll literally dig into the dirt to talk about cedar regeneration\, ecology\, and silvics. \nLaura Kenefic\, research forester with the U.S. Forest Service\, and Jean-Claude Ruel\, professor at Laval University\, are co-authors on the Northern White Cedar Silvicultural Guide and will lead this field tour! We will tour through examples of northern white cedar recolonization in old fields\, stands where cedar occurs as an associate species\, and classic northern white cedar swamp. Liz Thompson and Dan Kilborn of the Vermont Land Trust and Ross Morgan\, consulting forester and a founding member of the Forest Stewards Guild\, will also lead group discussions about cedar ecology and management in the Vermont landscape. The content will be geared towards foresters and ecologists managing cedar communities\, but all cedar enthusiasts are welcome! \nThis event has been assigned 5.5 Category 1 CFE credits by the Society of American Foresters .
