On May 3rd\, we will gather at Settler’s Lodge for dinner followed by fire-side conversations. \nMay 4th we will head to Baskahegan lands. Baskahegan is known for their sustainable forest practices. We will begin this visit by hiking back to their unmanaged Ecological Reserve – prepare for wet and muddy ground (bring extra socks!). The Black backed woodpecker is a rare bird in northern Maine. Once present in Baskahegan’s red pine stand\, the bird has not been seen for several years. We will stop at a recently harvested site to learn more and discuss habitat management for this species. \nAfter\, we will head to Baskahegan’s floating road where we will break for lunch. This site has undergone years of ecological survey alongside The Nature Conservancy. \nBefore we get bogged down by our digesting stomachs\, we will visit one final site\, the red pine stand. This site was formerly homogenized and now\, following several harvests\, shows a better shifting mosaic. \nWe will wrap up our discussion with a sendoff by 4 pm.  \nAgenda:   \nMay 3rd\, 2023 \n6:00 pm: Dinner at Settler’s Lodge \n7:30 pm: Campfire and conversation \nMay 4th\, 2023 \n7:00 am: Breakfast at Settler’s Lodge (for those who stayed the night before) \n8:30 am: Drive to meeting point \n9:00 am: Meet at the Burn Road log landing\, begin Baskahegan field tour \n12:00 pm: Field Lunch \n4:00 pm: Depart  \nPlease bring: \n\nWater bottle\nSnacks\nFootware that can get muddy and wet\, traveling through swampy\, unmanaged terrain\nInsect repellent and/or bug net\nSunscreen\nIf staying overnight\, necessary items (linens provided)\nA mask\, just in case\, for carpools to field sites\n\nTransportation: \nPlease be prepared to carpool.
